The “It Gets Better” Project. Just finished watching The Real World Las Vegas tonight where one of the roommates, Dustin, confesses to being in gay porn when he was just 18 years-old. His shithead homophobic roommates lay a guilt trip on him and ultimately make him feel ostracized from the group – his worst fear realized. Not to mention, the group doesn’t seem to mind when another roommate confesses to a stint in juvenile hall after being an accessory to an attempted murder – then gets kicked off the show for trashing their hotel suite. As I watch this poor kid Dustin scrambling to justify his his past, I think of Dan Savage. I’m a huge fan of Dan Savage and his Savage Love Podcast. He’s a sex educator and also discusses sexual/political issues pertaining to gay and straight people. One of his finest accomplishments was creating a new definition for the word “Santorum” after the infamously anti-gay Senator Rick Santorum. Google it for a chuckle. In response to several suicides of young gay teenagers, Savage started this “It Gets Better” project to tell young LGBT kids to hang in there. High School really sucks, but for gay kids in rural areas it has to be a nightmare. I’m not the rallying political type, but hating gay people really chaps my ass. If you know any youngsters who would benefit from these videos, please pass along.
